Challenges and Opportunities in International Joint Ventures between Architecture/Engineering Consultants: The Case Study of Kuwait

A comprehensive survey-based research study was conducted on both local and international architectural/engineering (AE) consultants engaged in international joint ventures (IJVs) in Kuwait. Initially, a pilot SWOT analysis process involving representatives from the study’s target population was conducted. This preliminary study informed the development of two primary research instruments: 1) a self-administered questionnaire and 2) an in-depth interview protocol.

Personal delivery and collection of 49 questionnaires were utilized to ensure a high response rate.  Interviews were conducted with prospective representatives who were/are profoundly engaged in IJV agreements, primarily in large-scale public projects, where IJV structure is dominant in Kuwait. Overall, from the SWOT analysis to the finalization of the data collection, 24 AE consultancy firms participated in this study (11 local and 13 internationals).
