CGN External Risk Reports

A dataset based on "external risk reports" produced by the Compañía Guatemalteca de Níquel (Guatemala Nickel Company, CGN), a subsidiary of Solway Investment Group, which operates a nickel mine in El Estor, Izabal, Guatemala. The reports document security incidents recorded by the company and were leaked by the Guacamaya collective through the Distributed Denial of Secrets website. This data set includes information on 445 incidents involving actors "external" to the company, such as neighbouring communities, government authorities, journalists, etc. Reports about "internal" incidents - such as workplace accidents or altercations - were left out. The incidents are identified by the original report number as it appears in the leaked documents. In some cases, a single report would contain information on incidents taking place at multiple times or locations. These appear as separate cases (rows) in the dataset and are assigned decimal extensions (for events taking place at different times) or letter suffixes (for events taking place at different locations).

In addition to date and location, the columns contain categorical variables assigned to each case: geographic location, incident type (and subtype), the principal “antagonist” actors involved, demands made by said actor or cause of the incident (with further subcategories), the target of those demands (e.g., the mining company, local government), method of resolution, and the lead actor in resolution. Dummy variables were used to indicate private security, police, or community relations personnel were present at the scene.
