Viruses are the most abundant biologic entities on Earth, and they play a critical role in the environment and biosphere where they regulate microbial populations and contribute to nutrient cycling. We characterized bacteriophages and other viruses in cave pools in Carlsbad Caverns National Park to identify novel viruses and test hypotheses about viral abundance and the impact of tourism on viral communities.
