The genome of Candidatus Thiobius zoothamnicola, the thiotrophic ectosymbiont of the colonial giant ciliate Zoothamnium niveum is contributed. This mutualism is a model system to study cooperation, and has convienently short generation times, being the only thiotrophic mutualism that can be cultivated for several generations in flow through acquaria. Genomes of the partners provide new oportunities for gaining insights into the mechanisms of cooperation.
