The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of autologous equine serum (AES) incubated for 24 h and autologous conditioned serum (ACS) on inflamed equine chondrocyte pellets in vitro. Overall design: Inflammation was induced in vitro in 3-D pellet cultures of chondrocytes using recombinant equine IL-1β (5ng/ml). The pellet cultures were treated with culture media as unstimulated controls, IL-1β or IL-1β and one of the following treatments: AES, AES 24h and ACS. Chondrocyte pellets were harvested after 2 and 48 hours and total RNA was isolated. The effects were evaluated using GeneChip® Equine Gene 1.0 ST Array (Affymetrix Inc.).
