beta-Arrestin-1 is Required for Adaptive beta-Cell Mass Expansion During Obesity

We report the surprising novel observation that beta-arrestin-1 (barr1), an intracellular protein known to regulate signaling through G protein-coupled receptors, is essential for beta-cell replication in insulin-resistant mice maintained on an obesogenic diet. These novel findings suggest that strategies aimed at enhancing barr1 activity and/or expression in beta-cells may stimulate the development of novel classes of antidiabetic drugs.
