Ancient Egyptian Pottery Workshop Database: A Comprehensive Survey of Ceramic Production Sites from the Predynastic to Islamic Periods

This relational database documents 107 archaeological sites associated with pottery production in ancient Egypt, spanning from the Predynastic period (c. 4000 BCE) through the Islamic period (c. 1500 CE). It records detailed information on workshop infrastructure — including kilns (177 records, of which 12 are stub records added to enforce referential integrity for orphan sub-table references), storage rooms, courtyards, puddling pits, potter's wheels, and forming tools — as well as pottery types, raw materials, and construction techniques. The database was compiled from published excavation reports and serves as the primary dataset for a PhD thesis examining the organisation and technology of Egyptian ceramic production across c. 5,500 years. Of the 107 sites catalogued, 71 are confirmed workshops with production evidence; 36 were reviewed and excluded. Data cleaning, standardisation, and analytical queries are embedded within the workbook.
