Cardiac pressure overload induces cardiac hypertrophy and eventually leads to heart failure. The initial stage of hypertrophy is a compensatory mechanism, and the early induction of fetal genes, such as Myh7 and Nppa, are present in a subset of cardiomyocytes. We hypothesize that compared to non-expressed cardiomyocytes, the fetal gene expressed cardiomyocytes progress to pathological remodeling early at the beginning of pressure-overload.
