The canine skin microbiome during (treatment of) atopic dermatitis

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of both bacterial (16S) and fungal (ITS) involvement on the canine skin in healthy dogs, and those suffering from atopic dermatitis (AD). Four different body sites (axilla, inguinal, periocular and trunk) were sampled before, during and after topical treatment with antimicrobial shampoo, and investigated with marker gene sequencing. Multiplex Illumina MiSeq sequencing of V3 and V4 hyper-variable regions of cutaneous bacterial 16S rRNA (16S), and fungal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), was used to define skin microbial communities.
