Samples from four prehistoric archaeological sites along the James River in Stutsman
County, North Dakota, and one sample from a prehistoric archaeological site on the Heart River
in Grant County, North Dakota, were examined for macrofloral remains. Sites along the James
River in southeastern North Dakota represent multiple occupations, including Middle Plains
Woodland, Late Plains Woodland, and Early Plains Village. Site 32GT32 along the Heart River in
southwest North Dakota appears to represent a Late Plains Village (post A.D. 1650) occupation.
Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information concerning plant resources utilized by the
various occupants of these sites.
