Democratisation, Political Participation, and Gender in Malawi, 2017

This study investigates what promotes women's participation in politics in Malawi, and the possible effects of women's participation in different political arenas. The study aims to produce new knowledge on the situation of female representation in politics in Malawi, in terms of descriptive, substantive and symbolic representation. The impact of three forms of representation was studied within three 'arenas' where politics is played out; in the arenas of the executive, parliament, and political parties. Trends and patterns of women representation, how female representation affects the policy process and outcomes, and the attitudes towards women in the public sphere were analyzed.
