In 2023, the yield of Gracilaria lemaneiformis in China decreased by at least 40% compared to that in 2022. According to investigations carried out in this study, the yield reduction was caused by a disease locally termed 'Boutou Bing' (head-burst disease). The first symptom of 'Boutou Bing' is the emergence of numerous light-red branches on the mycelium of Lei's scyphoid fungus. In the early stage of the disease, the mycelium gradually loses its original red pigmentation, and eventually leads to the decay of the mycelium.
