Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) Census Phase 2 Retrospective Survey Data

The Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO) Health Study was designed to investigate the health of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who have deployed to the MEAO, with a view to identifying factors associated with poorer or better health.

This military data collection comprises of data collected as part of the MEAO Census Study, a retrospective, self-report survey of ADF members who deployed to the Middle East between 2001 and 2009. The quantitative and qualitative data were collected in 2010 and 2011 through online surveys or hard copy questionnaires and included questions on deployment history, current health, and deployment experiences relating to the most recent MEAO deployment.

A total of 26239 eligible ADF members were invited to participate and 14032 consented to participate in the study (response rate 53%).

Data may be released for re-use subject to ethical approval by an appropriate ethics committee and full data access approval by the Military and Veterans’ Health Research Data Access Committee (MVHRDAC).
