Phloroglucinol modulates macrophage responses and attenuates intestinal and extraintestinal inflammation

Here, we show the capacity of phloroglucinol to modulate innate immune responses. Phloroglucinol attenuates macrophage responses to pro-inflammatory pathogens and stimuli, at least partially through the participation of the transcription factor, AhR. The activity of the phenolic compound is associated with modifications in the microbiota independently of short fatty chain acid formation. In vivo, the administration of phloroglucinol attenuates gut and extraintestinal inflammation, a protective effect that lasts at least 6 months.
