La’l u Gauhar (لعل و گوهر).
The love-story of La’l and Gauhar (ruby and pearl), a mathnawî based upon older sources and completed A.H. 1192 (A.D. 1778), by Ḥasan ‘Alî ‘Izzat, who was commissioned to write this poem by Nawwâb Fatḥ ‘Alîkhân Bahâdur, better known as Tîpû Sulṭân (who succeeded his father Ḥaidar ‘Alîkhân in the government of Maisûr, A.H. 1197=A.D. 1782).
Beginning, on fol. 8b:
الهى ده زعين لطف و رافت
بگلزارى (بگلزار read) كلامم بوى الفت
It concludes on fol. 69a; the date appears in the last verse but two:
ز هجرت يكهزار وصد و هشتاد
كه بود اِثنَا عَشَر بالاى تعداد
A version of the same story and with the same title (قصّۀ لعل و گوهر) in Dakhnî verses is preserved in No. 2495, f. 83a-97b of the India Office Library.
On ff. 1-5a there are written by another hand some mystical tracts, beginning: بدانكه اين رسالۀ دم از خواصّ الحيات نوشته مى شود‘ آفتاب و ماهتاب هر چه تأثير الخ.
Ff. 6 and 7 are left blank. At the end there are some more blank leaves, but on the last two leaves the first twenty-nine verses of the mathnawî are repeated.
