The Effect of Preparation on the Perception of Harmonic Dissonance and Tonal Modulation in Western Listeners dataset

Fifty-eight participants (29 female, 29 male) were asked to rate the valence, arousal, stability and tension of 25 short excerpts of music. The participants were also asked to respond to a short answer question about their listening experience. Participants were recruited from Prolific Academic and were required to be fluent in English and have no hearing difficulties or at minimum corrected hearing difficulties. The survey was released in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Overall, participants had a wide range of backgrounds and musical experience. The data collected from these responses was used to analyse the effect of preparation on the perception of harmonic dissonance and tonal modulation in Western listeners.
This dataset contains one excel spreadsheet with the quantitative and qualitative data and surrounding data information. The compositional stimuli and R script used to analyse the quantitative data has also been included.
