Scaptomyza (Diptera:Drosophilidae) of Hawai'i II

Due to the extreme isolation of the Hawaiian Islands, the archipelago is home to numerous endemic species and taxa. Among these are Scaptomyza, a genus that originated in Hawai'i, and also accounts for an entire third of the species-level diversity of Drosophilidae in Hawai'i. This large group is believed to have originated and diversified in Hawai'i, before breaking away to other land masses throughout the world. Researchers have proposed that their successful, rapid diversification was due to the small body size, expeditious generation time, and unique ecological and physiological adaptations.
