Impact of Tidal range on Water Exchange Study

The operation of a tidal lagoon can lead to exchange of a relatively large volume of water between the waters and impounded basin, resulting in changes in the water exchange and tidal flushing with potentially significant influence on water quality. Three tidal lagoon schemes proposed in the UK were considered in this study and the impact of the operation of the lagoons on the regional water exchange or renewal capacity. The three lagoons included: West Somerset Lagoon (WSL), Swansea Bay Lagoon (SBL) and North Wales Tidal Lagoon (NWTL). The exchange processes were investigated by modelling changes in a tracer within a control domain with and without the lagoon in place and for different operational procedures.
