Dataset related to the paper: "Impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the subtropical and subpolar gyres

This dataset contains netcdf files and jupyter notebooks relevant to the paper under review to the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans: Impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the subtropical and subpolar gyres (arXiv:2410.17089).

The NETCDF files in this dataset are:

SST_time_series.nc: Area-averaged global surface temperature for all experiments.

NAO_index_monthly_mean.nc: The NAO index computed using the first empirical orthogonal function of the sea level pressure between years 1958-2018 from the JRA-do dataset.

NAO_forcing_variables: The regression maps for surface temperature, zonal wind speed, meridional wind speed, sea level pressure, humidity, rainfall, snowfall, longwave radiation, shortwave radiation, showing how each variable changes per unit NAO index. These variables were taken between years 1958-2018 from the JRA-do dataset.

BVB_Control.nc: Annually-averaged gridwise North Atlantic barotropic vorticity budget for the control simulation. 

BVB_Negative_2sigma.nc: Same as (4), but for the -2sigma experiment.

BVB_Negative_1sigma.nc: Same as (4), but for the -1sigma experiment.

BVB_Positive_1sigma.nc: Same as (4), but for the +1sigma experiment.

BVB_Positive_2sigma.nc: Same as (4), but for the +2sigma experiment.

zonal_mass_transport.nc: Vertically-integrated mass transport in the zonal direction for the North Atlantic Ocean.

meridional_mass_transport.nc: Vertically-integrated mass transport in the meridional direction for the North Atlantic Ocean.

Barotropic_streamfunction.nc: Annually-averaged barotropic streamfunction calculated by cumulatively integrating the meridional mass transport (from 10) in the zonal direction from west to east.

potential_density.nc: Annually-averaged potential density (referenced to 2000 dbar) for the North Atlantic Ocean.
