CrCl2 and CrCl3 van der Waals materials exhibits very different magnetic properties, though the ligand coordination around Cr atoms is similar. Moreover, they are both strongly influenced by the growth substrate. During this experiment we intend to accurately characterize the overall symmetry, unit cell shape and size and other morphological properties of monolayers CrCl2 and CrCl3 respectively grown in situ at the BM32 beamline on Ni(111) and Au(111) single crystal substrate. The collected data will complement magnetic measurements obtained at the ESRF-ID32 beamline on these compounds and have the goal to correlate spin and lattice order in 2D halides.
