Wood decomposition in temperate forests is predominantly accomplished by white-rot and brown-rot fungi. Fomitopsis pinicola (Swartz: Fr.) Karst is an important and ubiquitous brown-rot fungus inhabiting softwood and hardwood causing a cubical brown-rot. Information about the draft genome sequence of F. pinicola (GR-9-4), will be helpful for future studies in population genomics, transcriptomics and Genome Wide Association in order to reveal the wood decay mechanisms of this brown-rot fungus.
