Academics in Germany

Education, professional career and professional situation of academics
in the FRG. The self-image of academics and their social-political
attitudes.

Topics: Information on college studies such as e.g. length of studies,
subjects studied and final examination; final grade; financing of
studies; participation in practical training and supplemental
qualifications acquired; description of first job after conclusion of
course of studies; type of application and mediation; characteristics
of occupation and place of work (scale); work areas and activities;
professional history; change of job; change of occupation;
interruptions of professional life; professional situation and
position; type of occupational further education; evaluation of college
studies; evaluation of relevance to practice and the general usefulness
of university education for professional career; judgement on one´s own
decision to study in retrospect; relationship to scientific work;
evaluation of the doctorate and general advancement of academics;
judgement on social standing of academics; factors determining one´s
own choice of occupation (scale); occupational satisfaction and
contentment with life; assessment of personal job security; attitude to
lowering the age limit; political interest; most important tasks of the
government; preferred measures to combat unemployment; attitude to
co-determination; judgement on the economic situation in the FRG and
one´s own economic situation; party preference (Sunday question);
self-assessment and assessment of the leading newspapers on a
left-right continuum; reading magazines and general information
conduct; satisfaction with income and salary classification;
memberships.

To complete a written part of the survey the respondent was handed a
booklet to be filled out, in which primarily questions were posed on
professional career, the characteristics of practiced occupation and
the image of leading magazines.

Besides this the general attitude to society and relations in the FRG
were surveyed by means of a scale.

Additionally the question of party preference was posed a second time
(thus in this case in writing).

Demography: year of birth; sex; marital status; number of children;
income; household income; social origins; annual gross income;
knowledge of foreign languages.
