The spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta, a uniquely large terrestrial carnivorous species, is particularly fascinating because of its distinct phenotypic traits, especially for scavenging lifestyle on diet exposure to microbial pathogens and complexity of social structure. However, molecular mechanisms of these outstanding phenotypes in spotted hyenas still are elusive. Here, we sequenced and assembled a high-quality long-read genome of the spotted hyena, with a contig N50 length of ~13.75 Mbp.
