Mindfulness and Response in NHS Staff Engagers, 2021-2024

MindArise was an observational investigation of mindfulness practice and outcomes in healthcare staff across 53 NHS sites in England. The investigation was longitudinal, with data collection running online between September 2022 and September 2023.

This project aimed to gain an overview mindfulness practice and evaluate whether dose-response relationships exist between amount of mindfulness practice and outcomes in healthcare staff. The project also looked at factors of engagement, such as potential facilitators and barriers, and the potential role of social identification with mindfulness in-groups.

Recruitment ran for 6 months. Healthcare staff needed to have engaged with mindfulness practice in the past and/or be engaging with mindfulness practice currently to be eligible. Promotional materials at site led to online participant information sheets and consent forms. Eligible participants who consented to join received a link to the baseline questionnaire. Automated invites were also sent to complete questionnaire 2 at 3 months, and questionnaire 3 at 6 months. A maximum of three email reminders were also sent for each questionnaire.

Each questionnaire contained questions relating to mindfulness practice and psychological outcome measures. The primary outcome was stress. Secondary outcomes also included burnout, mental health, wellbeing, compassion for self and compassion for others. Demographic information was collected in questionnaire 1, and social identification with mindfulness in-groups was measured in questionnaire 3.

One-thousand six-hundred and eleven participants consented to this data being shared with other research teams and made publicly available for future analysis, as indicated in consent forms.
