This FAIRsharing record describes: OME-NGFF is a data record format specification for storing bioimaging data in the cloud. It is built on the ZARR specification for scientific data storage. The objective of the OME-NGFF specification is to provide a standard format to store microscopy data and metadata on the cloud and locally.
Specification design decisions are discussed publicly (either on https://forum.image.sc or on https://github.com/ome/ngff).
Binary data, such as pixel intensities in an image, are stored in "chunked" units individually addressable, thus avoiding the need to download a whole dataset at once. Storage of pyramidal resolution is natively supported.
Metadata are stored in JSON formatted files within a OME-NGFF record, making them easy to access and parse.
Note that OME-NGFF is being continuously developed within its community, and was specifically designed to be easy to update. However it is considered ready for use as a storage specification and already being used in production in various products.
