The cause of such unpleasant odors in oshibori is recognized as a result of the metabolism of microbes living on the cloth. Although we were unable to identify a causative chemical for the odors in this study, a product of the metabolism of a Brevibacillus species is the likely cause of the malodors in the rental oshibori. To confirm this, genomic information on Brevibacillus reuszeri strain NIT02 was collected to discover a metabolic pathway for the cause of the malodorous chemicals in cells.
