Development of the parasitic protozoa Trypanosoma brucei in the insect vector, the tsetse fly, consists of three main stages: the non-infectious procyclic and epimastigote stages and the infectious metacyclic parasites. Cold shock domain containing protein 2 (CSD2) has previously been shown to be essential for metacyclic production. To further explore the role of CSD2 in metacyclic development, we overexpressed CSD2 in procyclic parasites and found that this caused rapid metacyclic development.
