The Soviet occupation had a devastating effect on the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Latvia (ELCL) which was reduced significantly both in size and public influence. Dr. Jouko Talonen has aptly called this experience of the ELCL as Theology in Ghetto. While interpreting the experience of the cross and sufferings of the church, theologians noted, that in many ways, this theology is similar to Martin Luther’s theology of the Cross. The article explores parallels of both theologies and especially draws on the example of pastor and one of the brightest theologians of that time Latvia, Nikolajs Plāte (1915–1983). The approach of the theology of the Cross and theology in Ghetto gave Plāte theological ways of interpreting this rather painful and negative Soviet experience in a positive and constructive manner.
