The figures show a gradual increase in the average age of mothers at childbirth in Italy between 2002 and 2023. As of 2023, the average age of mothers at childbirth in Italy was estimated to be 32.5 years, an increase of 1.9 years compared to 2002. Sicily was the Italian region with the lowest average age, with mothers aged 31.4 years on average when giving birth.Fertility rateMost developed countries today are characterized by a decline in the number of births. Italy hit a new low in 2022, with less than 400,000 births. In 2023, it was among the countries with the lowest fertility rate in the world, with every woman having 1.2 babies on average.Assisted reproductive treatment (ART)In 2021, roughly 3.7 percent of pregnancies in Italy were obtained through assisted reproductive treatments (ART) and women above 40 had the highest rate of pregnancies resulting from ART, with 18.13 percent. The number of ART undertaken in Italy increased constantly in the past two decades, except for a slight decline in 2020 when a general decrease in the number of births was experienced with the outbreak of COVID-19.
