Characterization of the gut microbiota in the zonulin transgenic mouse. Mus musculus

Zonulin (aka pre-haptoglobin 2) is the only known endogenous tight junction (TJ) regulator. The TJ help keep and establish the delicate balance and homeostasis that drives the antigen-trafficking in the gut. When this balance is not properly maintained the increased antigen trafficking can possibly activate the immune system affecting its basal state and development. The zonulin transgenic mouse (Ztm) exhibits an increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”). We are investigating the microbiota of these mice, to establish a link between increased permeability, dysbiosis, and immune system development.
