Pore Collapse and Fragmentation During Shock Compression of Sandstone

The response of porous materials such as sandstone to dynamic compression is critically important in planetary science (e.g., during asteroid impact), geophysics (e.g., during seismic events), and defense (e.g., during projectile impact). A thorough understanding of deformation mechanisms including fragmentation, pore collapse, and melting is critical for developing predicting models for dynamic compression events. Single bunch X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) at ID19 offers the ability to visualize these processes in-situ. We propose a series of experiments to shock-compression sandstones of varying porosity while using in-situ XPCI to image deformation at microsecond timescales. We will develop mesoscale models initialized with X-ray tomographs of the exact material microstructures and perform full-field simulations of the experiments. We will subsequently use both models and XPCI data to quantitatively study fragmentation, pore collapse, and melt in 3D.
