Geovisualizations Based on Open Data: A Framework for Evaluating User Engagement, Openness and Accessibility

This dataset provides a systematic overview of 26 interactive geovisualizations based on open data, created over the last two decades and still publicly accessible. The dataset was compiled as part of a study investigating how geovisualizations support citizen engagement, exploration, and understanding of complex spatial data. Each entry in the dataset captures multiple dimensions of the geovisualizations, including: Thematic scope and context (e.g., environmental, transport, local vs. national scale) Cartographic techniques and interactive functionalities (e.g., visualization types, interactivity level, analytical features) User impact and engagement potential (e.g., navigation, exploration support, AI-driven functionalities) Openness and accessibility (e.g., data sources and citation, licensing, compliance with web accessibility standards) The dataset provides structured, comparative information on creators, themes, technical design, and usability of geovisualizations, enabling further research on best practices, design improvements, and citizen-centered approaches to open-data visualization.
