MinION sequencing of foot-and-mouth disease virus

The sequencing of viral genomes provides important data for the prevention and control of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks. In this study we investigated the utility of the MinION to generate sequence data of sufficient quantity and quality for the characterisation of FMDV across multiple serotypes and in different sample matrices. This study provides information useful to assess nanopore sequencing as a tool for use with clinical samples. This preliminary study provides information useful to assess nanopore sequencing as a tool for use with clinical samples. Future research could investigate the use of the MinION as part of a low-cost and non-invasive sample-processing pipeline to generate quality sequence data in low resource settings.
