Number of insurance companies operating in Germany 2019-2021, by federal state

In 2021, the German state with the largest number of insurance companies in operation was North Rhine-Westphalia. The state, located in West Germany and the most populated state in the country, had a total of 99 insurance corporations operating at the time. This was followed by Bavaria, with a total of 69 insurers in operation. The top three is completed by Lower Saxony, with a total of 48 insurance companies.
