GNSS-R Capacity Building Workshop Successfully Held in India: Empowering the Next Generation of Remote Sensing Experts

Recognizing the strategic importance of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) and its potential integration with India's NavIC system for critical remote sensing applications—particularly soil moisture monitoring and disaster management—the IEEE GRSS Instrumentation and Future Technologies Technical Committee organized a focused 3-day capacity-building workshop. Held in Hyderabad (April 8-10, 2025), the event successfully targeted 21 PhD-holding academics and researchers from 13 prestigious Indian institutions, including IITs and leading space organizations. The comprehensive curriculum, delivered by international experts from institutions including NASA, Purdue University, and ISRO, provided a foundational understanding of GNSS-R and GNSS Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) principles, the innovative use of Signals of Opportunity (SoOp), and practical mission implementation strategies. Successfully executed despite initial logistical hurdles, the workshop achieved a high level of participant satisfaction, enhancing their knowledge and fostering valuable networking. This initiative marks a crucial step toward cultivating a skilled workforce empowered to integrate this advanced GNSS-R expertise into their academic endeavors, thereby contributing to India's growing remote sensing capabilities and capacity to address critical environmental and societal challenges.
