where are earthquakes located in the south island. The location of earthquakes around the south island are mostly along, high active tectonic plate boundaries where both the Australian and Pacific plate collide. The earthquakes that happen are unevenly distributed. One main place where earthquakes happen in the south island is along the alpine fault and its a linear, this is the black lined area. The green circles and the hedgehog mean there are clusters in that area. Both the fish and the elephant means there is linear in that area. The blue area is sparse.
