Aqua world Oarai Biofilm

The production of ammonia is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Thus nitrifying microorganisms (especially, ammonia oxidizing archaea and bacteria) that existing in biofilms of aquarium filtration systems are thought to be important to remove ammonia in tank waters. Recently, the existence of complete ammonia oxidizer (comammox Nitrospira) have been reported in several freshwater filtration systems, while their distribution in seawater systems remains to be fully understood. This research aims at clarifying the differences in biofilm microbial communities from three aquarium filtration systems with different water temperatures in a public aquarium (Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium) Sand samples were collected from each filtration system, and DNA were extracted. Amplicon sequencing was carried out to read the 16S-V4 region of microbial DNA by Illumina Miseq System.
