Lamp with elongated snout

Light ocher clay with turquoise blue glaze. In the basic form comparable with lamp O_71.17, but lacks the opening on the lamp shoulder. The rim of the vessel neck is not preserved. The predecessors of this type of lamp are the lamps with a high, squat neck and a protruding neck, which can be traced back to Mesopotamian lamps of the Parthian period and which were already found in Roman fortifications such as Dura Europos (Syria) and En Boqeq (Palestine). However, the developmental stage represented here, with a long, open snout, did not develop until the Islamic period and then spread from Central Asia to the Iberian Peninsula. The high, rounded body of the lamp and the clearly separated base plate distinguish it from the much simpler examples of the Abbasid-Fatimid period. The lamp a with a classical handle and a truncated snout corresponds to the lamps already represented in the Egyptian Fustat in the Fatmid-earlyayyubid period. In contrast, the variant with a slender snout and simple ribbon handle resembles the lamps that were still widespread in the Mamluk period (1250-1517).(Fless 1997: 132)
