Preaching Islam: politics, performers and publics in Indonesia: data

The dataset is the output of a study (2007-11) aimed at developing an understanding of Islamic oratory and its social significance in West Java, Indonesia. In particular, the study aimed to understand Islamic oratory as a form of participation for Muslims of West Java, to appreciate the interests involved in preaching events, and to understand the meanings and interests that are implied by Islamic oratory in general. Data was gathered via fieldwork observations, with the researcher attending oratory events as an audience member, and through follow-up interviews and discussions with event organisers and hosts. A special collection of related research materials have also been gathered in the form of: magazine and newspaper articles in Indonesian or Sundanese languages, contained in two scrapbooks; commercially available audio and video live recordings of oratories, in Indonesian or Sundanese; a collection of books in Indonesian or Sundanese on the science of oratory; and collection of ephemera, such as bulletins and publications from various organisations, relating to Islamic Society in West Java.
