This proposal aims for a continuation of the experiment a161841 of February 2025 which consisted of evaluating metal extraction from volcanic sources by acquiring HP-HT in situ data on the fluid-melt partitioning of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) with X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Zn and Cu are today critical metals for the energy transition being used in various manufacturing fields. They are commonly associated in deep earth settings but there is still a lack of knowledge on how efficient their extraction from the original magmatic source is to form economically ore deposits. In the last experiment Zn fluid-melt partition coefficients could be determined experimentally for Cl-rich fluids and a haplogranite melt composition. However, Zn and Cu are associated with varied magmatic compositions (rhyolite to basalt) and the effect of melt composition on Zn and Cu partitioning should be further investigated. Experiments will be performed in situ using a hydrothermal autoclave coupled with XAS.
