Data for: Investigating solid waste management strategies in developing countries using Nigeria as a case study

These data were collected as part of a PhD project.

The study was carried out to develop a participatory framework with the aim of proffering appropriate waste management and collection strategies in peri-urban areas. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from collective action groups, households, and State waste agencies. The investigation of the social aspects was explored by using a household survey to understand the perception of waste among the households and waste collection methods. The results on the social aspect show that the knowledge of solid waste management is not translated into the desired outcome.

The household survey was printed and distributed due to limited availability of electronic devices by households. The printed questionnaires were answered and uploaded on SPSS to derive descriptive statistics on the variables (N=410). The survey questionnaire was designed to build an understanding of solid waste management and the causal links of poor waste services.

Data validation was ensured using triangulation method. This required adopting Focus Group Discussion (FGD) for validation. For this purpose, households and relevant informants participated in an open discussion that was moderated by the researcher. NVivo was used to analyse the interviews and focus group discussions.
