VPRS 4376 Loan Act Commitments, Education Buildings

The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply. A considerable portion of the Departments commitments was to schools.At the period covered by this series a considerable number of loans were made to the states by the Commonwealth Government. These national recovery Loans were designed to provide the states with the funds to fund public works and provide work for the large numbers of unemployed persons. This series contains details of the use by the Public Works Department of money from these loans to fund school works including teachers residences. Details are given of the approvals, of the contract including the name of the contractor or payee, its particulars and locality and the amount involved.
