Data Supporting the Publication "Trends in Nitrate Contamination: Implications for Communities Reliant on Groundwater for Drinking"

This study examines water quality in Nebraska’s groundwater over several decades, focusing on temporal and spatial variations in nitrate concentrations across different well types. The findings reveal increasing trends in nitrate levels, with considerable spatial variability. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions in vulnerable regions and provides insights into the broader implications of agricultural leaching on groundwater quality and public health.

Data used in this study were obtained from the Nebraska Water Quality Clearinghouse, available at https://clearinghouse.nebraska.gov, and are published and owned by the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE). The dataset was downloaded in August 2025 and is included here in its original form to facilitate access for users outside the United States. Public supply data that are not publicly available have been excluded from this download. Access to restricted public supply data requires user registration at https://clearinghouse.nebraska.gov.
