Traffic measurements in Amalias Street. Conventional Road vs Shared Space

Amalias street is a downtown one-way and 278 m long street, which still serves access of vehicles to the pedestrianized (historical) city center of Nafplio. Amalias Street. is divided into two main sections: conventional road section and shared space road section. This allows meaningful comparisons in pedestrians' and drivers' behavior without conducting a before-after analysis. The dataset contains: vehicle headways, vehicle speeds and types, pedestrian volumes and crossings per 2-minutes time interval collected by radar detectors and manual counts in both section of the street. The traffic experiment was conducted on June 19th, 2021 at 11:30-14:00 and 18:00-20:30. Pedestrian crossings were increased in shared space, while vehicle speeds significantly dropped presenting lower variance compared to the conventional road section. Additionally, pedestrian crossings are negatively correlated to vehicle speeds in shared space; yet, no significant relationship between these two variables is reported in the courtesy crossing of the first section.
