The role of Akkermansia species and Phylogroup on Human Health

In this study, we sequenced the genomes of two Akkermansia strains isolated from one renal cell carcinoma and one amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patient in Durham, North Carolina at Duke University. Pangenomic comparison of these strains to other previously sequenced isolates of Akkermansia revealed that these two strains clustered separately from other known species and phylogroups of Akkermansia into a new species we named Akkermansia durhamii.
