资源简介:
Felt helplessness and hopelessness are associated with mental depression and pandemic-driven hopelessness could be detrimental to national well-being. In this research, we explore whether individuals are experiencing feelings of helplessness and hopelessness during the challenging times created by COVID-19. Study 1 shows helplessness developing in those who suffered job loss or pay cut, but hopelessness had not yet set in. Study 2 shows hopelessness in those who lost jobs or suffered a pay cut. A message addressing the cause – financial insecurity – appeared to help in alleviating the feelings of helplessness. A message promoting hope, however, was not effective in reducing a sense of hopelessness. The implications for messaging during crises are discussed.
