Whole-genome sequencing of XDR strains of S. Typhi

Typhoid fever is an important public health issue in developing countries and the travellers returning from endemic regions in the developed world. Emergence of antimicrobial resistance in S. Typhi, the main causative agent, continues to pose challenges in the treatment of this systemic infection. Here, we report the emergence of S. Typhi isolates harboring resistance to first-line drugs (chloramphenicol, ampicillin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole), fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins in India and characterized as extensively drug resistant (XDR).
