A 1:20 scale model of a container crane is subjected to two operational level earthquakes, two contingency level earthquakes, and recorded motions from a wharf at the Port of Oakland during the Loma Prieta earthquake. The crane will be constructed out of steel (the prototype material). The ground motions will be scaled to 1/8, 1/6, ¼, ½ and full scale. The ground motions will be applied in the trolley travel direction (along the X axis) as well as combinations of the ground motions along all three axes. There will be a total of 30 runs. Important response quantities include the acceleration and displacement of the boom, uplift and horizontal displacement of the legs, and the stresses around the portal joint.
