The Victoria Police (VA 724) has operated since 1853 on a District basis with changes throughout time in the boundaries of the districts with these changes being announced in the Police Gazette. Each District was under the supervision of a Superintendent of Police.This series contains records pertaining to the Geelong Police District. From 1854 to 1859 it was used to copy the General Orders and Circulars sent by the Chief Commissioner of Police to District Offices and from 1855 to 1860 to record the District Orders issued by the Chief Commissioner. For a considerable time it was the practice of all police offices to copy these into a volume to be kept for reference in that office.From 1860 to 1898 it provided an official record of the District Orders from the Superintendent at Geelong to the District and from 1882 to 1894 Circular Memoranda from the Superintendent to the Geelong District.
