Megalobrama amblycephala is a cyprinid species with desirable qualities for aquaculture, such as strong adaptability, fast-growth, herbivorous feeding habit and resistance to disease. It has been recognized as a major species for freshwater aquaculture in China. Like many Cyprinidae species, it possesses a certain amount of intermuscular bones (IBs), which occur only in lower teleosts amongst vertebrates and segmental, serially homologous ossifications in the myosepta. Due to the unique origin area, IBs have brought about many adverse impacts on the edibleness and economic value of a fish species. In view of its potential value, we performed high-throughput sequencing to further understand the molecular mechanisms during IBs development in M. amblycephala.
